Goodguide.com - the website that makes it super easy for you to get all the information you want about over 100,000 products (and counting).
The team of chemists, toxicologists, nutritionists, sociologists and enivronmental experts at goodguide.com analyse the products based on how ethical, healthy and environmentally friendly they are and give them a simple rating out of 10. You can see the breakdown of the ratings in every area and can even personalise your settings so that the site finds products that sit better with what’s most important to you. There’s even a toolbar for shopping online and and mobile app which scans barcodes in the supermarket.
It’s great to see technology making it easier to shop consciously.

Get on board the non-consumption train
Ask yourself the following 13 questions before you continue through that check-out line:1. Is this purchase something I need?
2. Do I already own something that will serve the same purpose?
3. Can I borrow one instead of buying new?
4. Can I make something that will serve the same purpose?

The organisations behind No Patents On Seeds are especially concerned about increasing number of patents on plants, seeds and farm animals and their impact on farmers, breeders, innovation and biodiversity. These patents create new dependencies for farmers, breeders, food producers and consumers. These patents have to be regarded as misappropriation of basic resources in farm and food production and as general abuse of patent law. We call for an urgent re-think of European patent law in biotechnology and plant breeding and to support clear regulations that exclude from patentability processes for breeding, genetic material, plants and animals and food derived thereof.

We’ve mentioned a few times how Messzelátó is organising cool workshops these days. Throughout March and April, we’ll have workshops in how to make soap, cosmetics and cheese. The workshops I just linked to are in Hungarian, but there will also be a soapmaking workshop held in English! So if you, like us, have …ummm…certain difficulties with mastering the Hungarian language, you should sign up!
To advertise a little bit more - this is a workshop where you can learn the basics of how to make soap from scratch using natural ingredients and traditional methods. You will learn what oils are good for moisturizing or make a lot of bubbles when you use it. And you will walk home with one whole kilo (about 10 normal sized soaps) in the fragrance of your choice, all for 5000 ft.
You can sign up for the English soapmaking workshop here, and after you do all you have to do is come to the Messzelátó office on the 2nd of March at 18.00 (lasts until 21.00)!

Many people throw away valuable things which is wasting. This group allows you to notify others before you throw away something. If you do not need something, let us know. Maybe someone needs exactly what you want to throw away. If you need something, let us know. Someone in our group might have what you need lying around in his shed, and would be willing to give it to you for free!
Yeah, so you need to join this group! It doesn’t matter if you have something to give away or something you need, one day you will! It’s also a super concept that needs all the support it can get. Don’t throw away - give away!

“The Public Eye Awards mark a critical counterpoint to the annual meeting of the World Economic Forum (WEF) in Davos. Organized since 2000 by Berne Declaration and Friends of the Earth (in 2009 replaced by Greenpeace), Public Eye reminds the corporate world that social and environmental misdeeds have consequences - for the affected people and territory, but also for the reputation of the offender.
This year’s categories are the GLOBAL award (chosen by an internal panel of experts) and the PEOPLE’S award (chosen by YOU and thousands of other online activists).”
Vote now. http://www.publiceye.ch/en/

We’ll only be working here for a couple more months, and it’s time to look for new volunteers ! What this means is that you can work here, in szuper cool Messzelátó!
Do you or anyone you know want to work for a year (starting in June) in an environmental organisation in Budapest?
Doing EVS here means you will get a place to live, language lessons, money for food, pocket money, plane/train tickets to get here, insurance and a chance to work with urban development in Budapest’s 8th district and other interesting questions.
On top of this we can add that Budapest is one of the coolest cities in Europe, if not in the whole world. It’s full of weird and arty cafés and bars (where the beer is cheaper than what is good for you) and restaurants with lovely and cheap Hungarian food. Budapest is also home to one of Europe largest festivals, and about a trillion other cool events (concerts, street festivals, art exhibitions etc.) that are happening constantly around the city. Basically, you will have an awesome time here, just because Budapest is amazing.
For the official description of the EVS project and how to apply, click ‘read more’. You can also send an email to evs@messzelato.hu with any questions!
